Abstract
Ulcerative colitis is a medical condition characterized by chronic inflammation of the mucosa of the colon, the specific cause of which is unknown, classifying it as an idiopathic disease. This disorder usually begins in the rectum and often spreads continuously upwards, affecting part or even all of the large intestine. However, it is important to mention that there are some patients who only suffer from proctitis, which is the inflammation of the rectum, or colitis which is located on the left side of the colon, and in these cases, the presence of inflammation can be observed in the cecal region, which is the area where the small intestine joins the colon. One of the most distinctive and representative symptoms of this disease is the presence of diarrhea containing blood. A male patient presents with abdominal pain which intensifies with meals and improves with bowel movements, and he also reports bloody stools on several occasions.
Keywords: bloody diarrhea, abdominal pain, chronic inflammation.
