Abstract

A paranasal sinus X-ray is a type of imaging test used to examine and visualize the paranasal sinuses, which are air-filled cavities located in the frontal region of the human skull. This procedure provides detailed images that help doctors diagnose conditions related to these anatomical structures. A total of four types of paranasal sinuses can be identified, which are as follows: the maxillary, frontal, sphenoid, and finally the ethmoid. In order to effectively observe the frontal sinuses and anterior ethmoid sinuses, specialists use the projection known as Caldwell. On the other hand, when it is necessary to examine the maxillary sinuses, the projection called Waters is used. It is important to note that, in children under 6 years of age, imaging tests can result in misinterpretations or confusion. This is because at this stage of development, which precedes puberty, the paranasal sinuses are not fully developed. In addition, children often have redundant nasal mucosa that tends to occupy the air space, which can further complicate the interpretation of these imaging studies.
