Abstract

Neonatal diarrhea continues to be one of the main challenges in calf rearing. In view of this reality, it is proposed that probiotics help to prevent it in a safe way, strengthening the intestinal health of the calf, reducing mortality and offering an alternative to the excessive use of antibiotics. In this context, the objective of this research is to review the effect of probiotics in the prevention of neonatal diarrhea in calves, for this, the study was based on a documentary literature review through an exhaustive search of several scientific articles in databases such as Scielo, Pubmed, Dialnet; where 50 articles were investigated of which 24 were selected with academic rigor and which addressed issues such as enteritis, intestinal microbiome and the use of probiotics as a preventive strategy for diarrhea in calves based on scientific evidence. The inclusion of probiotics in calves reduces the incidence of diarrhea, its preventive effect is reflected in the improvement of the immunological status, reinforces the intestinal barrier and promotes beneficial bacteria such as Bifidobacterium. In addition, by stimulating digestive enzymes, probiotics represent an effective tool against enteritis, improving animal health, where it was concluded that neonatal diarrhea in calves represents a serious health and economic problem, therefore, probiotics have demonstrated efficiency in the control of intestinal health, the strengthening of the intestinal system and the improvement of the intestinal microbiome.
