Abstract
The present study evaluated the presence of symptoms compatible with dry eye syndrome in administrative workers of tuna companies in the city of Manta during 2020, with the purpose of describing their frequency and their possible relationship with factors in the work environment that can affect visual health. The Donate questionnaire, a previously validated instrument for the identification of ocular symptoms associated with dry eye syndrome, was applied, along with a sociodemographic form. The research adopted an observational, descriptive, cross-sectional and quantitative approach. The sample consisted of 233 participants selected for convenience from among the administrative staff who agreed to participate voluntarily in the study. Among the main results, it was observed that 54% of the respondents presented symptoms compatible with dry eye syndrome, with a predominance in women (59%) and more frequent in the age group of 31 to 40 years. The most reported symptoms were sensitivity to light (8%) and dry eyes (7%). These findings suggest a possible relationship between the presence of ocular symptoms and prolonged exposure to electronic devices during the working day. The results highlight the importance of considering visual health in the occupational environment and promoting strategies aimed at reducing risk factors associated with the prolonged use of screens in the work environment.
