THREAT OF PRETERM LABOUR (TPL): THE EFFECTIVENESS OF NURSING CARE IN THE ADMINISTRATION OF CORTICOSTEROIDS AND TOCOLYTICS

Abstract
The risk of preterm birth has a high global incidence rate, leading to serious neonatal complications such as intraventricular haemorrhage and respiratory distress syndrome; it is also a key determinant of maternal and foetal morbidity and mortality. Objective: To analyse the influence of nursing care on the effectiveness of corticosteroid and tocolytic administration in pregnant women at risk of preterm birth. Methodology: A systematic review based on the PRISMA statement, involving a search of databases such as Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, Scielo, Google Scholar and Dialnet for publications in English and Spanish from 2021 to 2026. Studies were selected according to inclusion and exclusion criteria, analysed and synthesised, resulting in a total of 16 selected studies. Conclusions: Nursing care has a positive influence on the effectiveness of corticosteroid and tocolytic administration, as this depends on constant monitoring and the identification of priority diagnoses such as labour pain, the onset of infections or potential side effects. The thoroughness of the nursing staff’s work improves patient safety and adherence to treatment. Therefore, the nursing team must be properly trained and have access to standardised and up-to-date institutional protocols to optimise patient-centred care.
