ASSESSMENT OF THEORETICAL KNOWLEDGE AND PRACTICAL SKILLS ON WOUND MANAGEMENT IN ADOLESCENTS

Abstract
Proper wound management is an essential component of first aid, given the need for a timely response to injuries and bleeding that may occur in school settings. The research objective was to assess the level of theoretical knowledge and practical skills regarding wound management and bleeding control among adolescents. A quantitative, descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted among a population of 71 third-year high school students at the Sagrada Familia Educational Unit, aged 17 to 18. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire and an observation guide to assess practical skills; the instruments were validated by experts and showed a reliability of α = 0.88. The results demonstrated a favorable level of theoretical knowledge: 81.7% correctly identified hand washing or disinfection, 95.8% recognized persistent and profuse bleeding as a warning sign, and 90.1% identified deep wounds with exposed tissue as situations requiring immediate attention. Likewise, 87.3% recognized direct and continuous pressure as the appropriate measure for hemorrhage control, while 93.0% identified the use of a tourniquet when this measure is insufficient. However, practical skills showed variability, particularly in specific bandaging and wound-cleaning techniques. It is concluded that adolescents have favorable theoretical knowledge, but gaps remain in practical application; therefore, training should be strengthened through educational strategies and practical simulations.
