Abstract

Abstract

Toxoplasmosis is a disease that is transmitted from animals to people. It is caused by the protozoan toxoplasma gondii. Cats are the definitive hosts of toxoplasma gondii. This study aimed to find out how many domestic cats had structures compatible with T. gondii in the Matriz parish of Pujili canton, Cotopaxi Province. For this, a study with a quantitative, observational, descriptive, and cross-selection approach was carried out. Tests were taken from 30 domestic cats and sent to the Ser Commune Clinical Laboratory at the Instituto Technologic Universitario Espana. In the lab, a coproparasitological analysis was performed using a direct preparation with saline solution and lugol´s iodine, and it wasa observed under an optical microscope to look for parasitic structures compatible with T. gondii. The parasitic analysis showed that out of the 30 samples analyzed, 7 had findings compatible with T. gondii. The parasitic analysis showed that out of the 30 samples analyzed, 7 had findings compatible with T. gondii, indicating a 23, 3% apparent prevalence. In contrast, the remaining 23 samples showed a negative result, which amounts to 76.7% of the samples analyzed. The analyses showed that, of the 30 cats studied, 7 cats (23.33%) had structures compatible with Toxoplasma gondii, and 23 cats (76.67%) tested negative. The results show that the parasite is present in part of the cat population studied and that it´s important to monitior health and properly manage feces. It is concluded that preventive measures need to be reinforced and that future studies should use specific diagnostic techniques to confirm the presence of T. gondii.
