OSTEOSARCOMA OF THE UPPER JAW IN A MALE PATIENT: A RARE PATHOLOGY. CASE REPORT

Non-odontogenic malignant neoplasms of the jaws are rare; however, the diagnosis has very serious prognostic implications and often requires major therapeutic interventions. Osteosarcoma (OS) is the most common bone cancer. Osteosarcoma rarely affects the upper jaw. Patients are usually older than those with long bone sarcoma and metastases are rare. It shows a different pattern of behavior than long bone sarcomas. OS is characterized by proliferation of osteogenic precursor cells and formation of osteoid or immature bone. OS results from a combination of genetic aberrations and a favorable microenvironment. We present a male patient with pain in the upper jaw and palpation reveals a localized mass in the same bone. Osteosarcoma of the maxilla is a diagnostic and treatment problem.
