METHODOLOGICAL PROTOCOL FOR DIAGNOSING MANUAL SKILLS IN DENTISTRY STUDENTS AT THE CENTRAL UNIVERSITY OF ECUADOR

Abstract

This study aims to develop a methodological protocol to diagnose the manual skills of dental students at the Central University of Ecuador, focusing on identifying weaknesses and areas for improvement to optimize their clinical training. The research employs a qualitative approach, based on direct observation of students using dental simulators, to assess their manual dexterity. The applied methodology includes verifying individual experiences and analyzing motor deficiencies in a sample of 35 third-semester students. The results indicate that the use of simulators allows for an accurate evaluation of psychomotor skills, identifying strengths and weaknesses in fine motor skills and manual dexterity. The study highlights the importance of integrating innovative techniques such as PhanHome, which facilitates autonomous practice and improves students' clinical performance. Through this protocol, personalized corrective strategies were implemented, enhancing the ethical and technical development of future dentists. This methodological approach significantly contributes to dental education by providing a replicable tool for evaluating and improving practical training in other institutions, ensuring quality clinical care.
